You Vote with your Purchase

We believe that choosing healthy, clean food should be simple, easy, and accessible to everyone.

But that’s not how things are today. The labels on our food products are confusing
and hard to read. Most of the products we consume have ingredients that we can’t even pronounce and certainly don’t know what they do to us.

We, as consumers, have to scour ingredient labels and the internet just to get some idea about all the toxins and contaminants in our food and how to avoid them (if you’re lucky enough to have options that don’t contain them.)

From this frustration came Is It Clean.

We are a group made up of activists, entrepreneurs, writers, nutritionists, and functional medicine doctors. But most importantly, consumers.

Consumers who want to change the norms of the food industry.

We aim to bring transparency and accessibility to the food industry, because we all vote with our purchase.

When we choose products with clean ingredients, we send a message to the industry that these are the only products we will accept.

By rating brands on how clean their ingredients are, with our ingredients database, and with educational articles about various nutrition and health topics, we are making it easier for consumers to make healthier decisions.

How do we make revenue?

We make revenue in the following ways:

  1. Donations: As a not-for-profit, one of our main ways of generating revenue is through donations from people and companies who support our mission and want to see us succeed. We carefully vet our donors and only accept donations from people and companies that are in alignment with our mission and core values.

  2. Referrals: We partner up with some brands that we have independently rated a 5 or 4 leaf rating using referral links. If someone comes across a 5 or 4 leaf brand on our website, clicks the link to that brand’s website, and purchases an item, if we are partnered with that company we would receive a % of that sale. Partnerships like this help spread the awareness of clean companies while allowing us to generate revenue that goes directly back into expanding our mission. As a not-for-profit, our number one priority is making healthy eating easy, not shareholder returns. So, we are not incentivized to create the highest revenue partnerships, but rather to promote and partner with the cleanest companies.

  3. Future Products: As we continue to expand and grow, there will be opportunities for us to bring in revenue in new ways. We intend to diversify our revenue streams just as any smart business would.

Where does our profit go?

As a not-for-profit – all of the revenue generated, including any profits, goes to our three initiatives: our food rating database, ingredient database, and educational articles. We also intend to support food system activism around the world so we can make healthy food more accessible to everyone. We run our company as a for profit would, the only difference is that all of the profit we generate goes right back to supporting our mission of making healthy eating easy.

Examples of where your donations go: web design and development, nutritionists rating and writing, marketing and media to spread education, initiatives to get clean food in schools, documentaries on the food industry and clean eating, etc.

When we are educated consumers, we can change the world, one purchase at a time.
