Ingredient Score:

Rated at 2/5 green leaves, the Udi’s Original product presents a selection of ingredients that do not fully align with the highest standards of clean eating. The lack of organic certification detracts from its clean food credentials, as the presence of conventional agricultural practices often involves the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.
The product earns recognition for its use of non-GMO ingredients, which aligns with the preferences of health-conscious consumers who seek to avoid genetically modified organisms in their diet. However, the addition of sugar, specifically in the banana chips, raises concerns due to the negative health impacts associated with excess sugar consumption, including increased risk of chronic diseases.
The inclusion of “natural flavor” in the ingredient list is problematic. Despite the seemingly benign descriptor, “natural flavor” can encompass a variety of substances that are not always transparent to the consumer, and some may have questionable health effects. Furthermore, the use of canola oil as a fat source is contentious. Although it is a common ingredient in many processed foods, canola oil is often heavily refined and may undergo processes that involve high heat and the use of chemical solvents, which are not ideal for a clean eating diet.
The blend of nuts such as walnuts, cashews, almonds, and pistachios, along with certified gluten-free oats, could be seen as beneficial, offering a source of protein, healthy fats, and fiber. However, these positive aspects are overshadowed by the aforementioned concerns.
With a focus on cleaner food options, Udi’s Original would benefit from revising its formula to include organic ingredients, eliminating added sugars, and replacing potentially harmful additives and oils with more wholesome alternatives. Such changes would enhance the product’s standing among health-conscious consumers and could improve its green leaf rating.
