Rating:     We Avoid

Ingredient Score:

Rated at 1/5 green leaves, the Sunkist Strawberry soft drink falls at the lower end of our scale, which signals a product that consumers seeking cleaner food options should avoid. This beverage, non-organic and containing GMO ingredients, starts from a disadvantaged position in terms of health-conscious choices.

The ingredient list of Sunkist Strawberry includes carbonated water and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), the latter of which is a significant detractor due to its association with numerous health risks when consumed in excess. HFCS is a type of added sugar that our review process penalizes heavily, as it is often linked to obesity, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders.

Further compounding the health concerns are the presence of sodium benzoate and Red 40. Sodium benzoate serves as a preservative, but it raises red flags for its potential to form benzene, a known carcinogen, when combined with vitamin C. Red 40, meanwhile, is an artificial dye that has been the subject of debate regarding its safety and effects on children’s behavior.

The product also contains citric acid, which, while naturally occurring in citrus fruits, is often manufactured using molds that may or may not be genetically modified. This aspect further lowers the product’s standing on our scale. Additionally, the inclusion of both natural and artificial flavors is problematic. While “natural flavors” can encompass a wide range of substances, “artificial flavors” are synthetic and can be concerning to those avoiding chemically processed ingredients.

With all these factors taken into account, the Sunkist Strawberry is not recommended for those looking for cleaner, healthier beverage options. The product’s composition, with its non-organic status, GMO ingredients, and array of additives and artificial components, positions it as a choice to pass over for consumers prioritizing their health and well-being.
