Artificial Flavors

What is it:

Artificial flavors are substances created to mimic the taste and aroma of natural flavors, enhancing the sensory experience of food products. They are manufactured through a complex process involving chemical synthesis. Typically, artificial flavors are derived from a combination of synthetic compounds and natural substances that have been identified as having desirable flavors. These substances are selected, isolated, purified, and then blended together in precise proportions to create a specific flavor profile. An artificial flavor can be one of the FDA-allowed flavoring chemicals that are GRAS or it can be any of the other chemicals regulated by the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association of the United States (FEMA).

Rating:

Artificial flavors are synthetically created chemicals that are not found in nature. Some animal studies have suggested the potentially toxic effects of some flavors. FEMA’s safety data on individual flavors that have been approved for use are difficult to find and they state that while some studies suggest potentially toxic effects in animals, there is no reason to suspect toxicity in humans at normal doses.
