Ingredient of the week: CANOLA OIL

What is it?

Canola is an oilseed crop that was created in Canada from the rapeseed plant. Rapeseed oil and canola oil are often used interchangeably, however, canola oil is a genetically modified version of rapeseed oil that is engineered to contain less erucic acid and glucosinolates. Canola is one of the most common oils found in food and is also used in animal feed, as an alternative fuel to diesel, and in the production of plasticizers like tires. The canola crop goes through an extensive production process that includes bleaching, deodorizing, and the use of a harsh chemical called hexane. Canola is a highly refined, highly processed oil.

Rating:

Canola oil is usually GMO-derived and is highly processed. It has been shown to increase inflammation, raise bad cholesterol, damage memory and brain function, and increase weight in animal models. There are a few industry-funded studies showing it increases heart health, these studies were done with less refined and unheated canola oil which is not used in the cooking industry. Those studies are also disputed by an independent study that showed that canola oil did not improve heart health. Furthermore, the refining of canola oil can cause the formation of trans fats, which are harmful to the human body. The World Health Organization called for a ban of toxic industrial trans fats by 2023.

As you can see.. not all oils are created equal:

Clean Consuming: You Are What You Eat

A Netflix Documentary

Alright so we binge-watched the newest food documentary on Netflix which is all the buzz at the moment and here are our takeaways.

And for those of you that don’t like reading much and just want a quick, “Should I watch it or not?” the answer is YES definitely worth the watch.

Ok now for the meat and potatoes on this documentary..

A few things it highlights really well and brings great awareness too:

  1. The standard American diet is literally killing us. Our diet is where all of our health problems stem from.

  2. How and why our food system and farms have changed after World War 2

  3. It does a great job of educating on where your food comes from – which everyone should know!

  4. Our food system is destroying the planet as well as our health

A few qualms we had:

  1. While the twin study in theory is a cool idea, watching twins over an 8 week period doesn’t actually provide much data. It would be cool to watch twins for a year or longer and see their differences based solely on diet.

  2. We don’t believe it’s as simple as a vegan diet vs an omnivore diet (or any other diet for that matter) What it should really be about is removing processed food from our diets.

  3. We felt that this documentary was promoting processed plant-based meat products such as Beyond Meat or Impossible Meat, which are TERRIBLE for you. They share how awful deli meat is (which it is) but the alternative should not be fake deli meat, it should be removing it totally from your diet.

Overall, we would recommend watching this documentary. We thought it was very informative and does a great job highlighting how our food effects our health, our society, our planet and more.
