Refined avocado oil is commonly used as cooking oil for high-heat methods and in some packaged goods looking to avoid other vegetable oils. It is processed by the addition of a chemical solvent, which extracts the oil from the avocado, and then heated to burn off the solvent. It is then further refined by bleaching and deodorizing the oil with chemical or physical agents.
The refining process of avocado oil uses high heat that can result in the formation of volatile compounds. Additionally, chemical solvents, such as hexane, may be used which may have negative health effects. However, there have been no studies published showing an association between refined avocado oil intake and negative health effects. Rather, refined avocado oil has been linked to various health benefits, such as reducing inflammation, improving biomarkers of cardiometabolic health, and reducing cholesterol.
