Brown HT
What is it:
Brown HT, also known as Food Brown 3, E155, or Chocolate Brown HT, is a synthetic food colorant commonly used in the food and beverage industry to give a brown or caramel-like hue to products such as sauces, gravies, desserts, and confectionery items. It is produced for commercial use through chemical synthesis, typically starting with the reaction between a diazonium salt and an aromatic compound containing hydroxyl or amino groups.
Rating:
Brown HT is a synthetic dye that is not naturally occurring. It has been banned in the United States, Australia, and many European countries. Rat studies are mixed on the physiological affects that regular ingestion of Brown HT has on development, organ changes, cholesterol levels, vascular health, and more, with some studies suggesting no significant changes from consumption and others suggesting slight significant changes. Concerns over synthetic food dyes and their potential affect on children behavior has been researched.
