What is it:

Calcium chloride is a compound composed of calcium and chlorine ions that is used as a firming agent, stabilizer, and preservative. Calcium chloride is produced through several methods, with one common approach being the reaction of calcium carbonate or calcium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid. It is commonly found in products like canned vegetables, cheese, and beverages.

Rating:

Calcium chloride is a commonly used additive and preservative, however, long term human research is lacking on its safety in food. It has not been associated with negative health effects, however, it may contain very low amounts of aluminum which can be toxic. It is commonly used in neonatal parenteral feeding. Calcium chloride is a skin and eye irritant, and certain preparations of hydrochloric acid are considered toxic.
