What is it:
Carob powder is a natural sweetener derived from the carob tree pod that looks similar to cacao powder. It is produced by taking the sweet pulp of the ripe carob pod and drying it, roasting it, and grinding it into a powder. It is commonly used as a substitute for semi-sweet chocolate since it’s lower in sugar and fat.
Rating:
Carob powder is a minimally processed food that is rich in antioxidants and contains beneficial minerals and fiber. Carob may help lower LDL cholesterol and aid in the treatment of acute onset diarrhea. Although carob is high in sugar, research has suggested that it may have a beneficial effect on metabolic health, including improving glucose metabolism, improving endothelial function, improving satiety, reducing inflammation, and more. Additionally, carob cultivation appears to benefit the sustainable development goals of the Mediterranean region.
