Chromium chelate is a food additive that consists of chromium, an essential mineral, bound to a chelating agent, often amino acids or organic compounds, which help improve its bioavailability in the human body. Chromium is an essential element that is necessary for carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Chromium chelate is typically produced by mixing chromium with the chelating agent, such as glycine. This chelation process enhances the stability and absorption of chromium in the digestive system, ensuring that the body can effectively utilize it. It is commonly found in dietary supplements and certain food/beverage products to support blood sugar balance and provide nutritional fortification.
Chromium supplementation has been demonstrated mixed efficacy in regulating blood sugar levels and other metabolic parameters in various populations of type 2 diabetic patients. While chelating chromium aids with absorption, the primary form of chromium studied is chromium picolinate, the supplemental form, which may produce different effects than chromium chelate. A comparative study suggested that chromium chelate may not be effective in increasing insulin sensitivity. While more research is needed, there is no current research showing that longterm intake of chromium is toxic except in situations of severe excess.
