Dextrose

Dextrose

What is it:

Dextrose is a simple sugar derived from corn, wheat, or potato starch that is bioidentical to glucose. It is used in many packaged goods as a sweetener and a preservative. To produce it, the corn or wheat are heated to high temperatures and filtered so that liquid starch remains. Then water and enzymes are used to break down starch (long chains of glucose molecules) into individual glucose molecules.

Rating:

Consuming high amounts of sugar in any form has been linked to many adverse health effects such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Dextrose is the same as pure glucose and contains no other beneficial nutrients. Additionally, dextrose is often produced from corn, which is a GMO crop. Wheat, corn, and potato are often treated with potentially harmful herbicides and pesticides.
