What is it:
FD&C Green no 3., also known as Fast Green FCF or Food Green 3, is a synthetic food coloring used to add a green color to various food and beverage products. Green #3 is derived from petroleum and produced through chemical synthesis, involving the reaction of aromatic hydrocarbons with chlorine, followed by the addition of sulfonic acid groups to create the desired green pigment. It is commonly used in products such as candies, desserts, beverages, and processed foods to provide a vibrant green appearance.

FD& C green no. 3 is a synthetic chemical that is derived from petroleum, which is toxic upon consumption. It has not been approved in the European Union and other countries due to safety concerns but is still used in the U.S. A study showing a carcinogenic effect from FD& C green no. 3 in rat bladders was published in 1981, however, a peer review later showed it not to be carcinogenic in this species and the WHO deemed it safe for consumption. A study in rats demonstrated that it may inhibit synaptic activity in the hippocampus region.
