Folic Acid

What is it:

Folic acid, also known as folate, is a B-vitamin that is essential for proper cell growth and development. It is particularly important during pregnancy as it helps to prevent birth defects in the baby’s brain and spine. Folic acid is found naturally in foods such as leafy greens, citrus fruits, and beans, but it is also added to packaged foods such as bread, pasta, and cereal. This fortification is done to ensure that people get enough folic acid in their diet, as some people do not consume enough.

Rating:

Folic acid is an essential vitamin for maintaining health that adds to the nutritional density of fortified foods.
