Glycerol ester of rosin (E 445), also known as ester gum, is a food additive commonly used as an emulsifier, stabilizer, and thickening agent in various food and beverage products. It is derived from rosin, a natural resin obtained from pine trees, and is esterified with glycerol. It is commonly incorporated into food products such as soft drinks, chewing gum, and confectionery items to enhance their texture, stability, and consistency. Its inclusion as a food additive helps prevent ingredient separation and extend product shelf life.
The evaluations of glycerol esters of wood rosins as a food additive performed by the EFSA determined that there was not enough data available to determine its safety. However, glycerol esters of wood rosins have been approved for use by the FDA in the 1960s. There is no data showing any harmful effects of glycerol esters of wood rosins.
