Himalayan Pink Salt
What is it:
Himalayan pink salt is a type of rock salt harvested from the Khewra Salt Mine in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains in Pakistan. It is renowned for its distinctive pink color, which is attributed to trace minerals, particularly iron, found within the salt crystals. The production of Himalayan pink salt involves extracting the salt from underground mines and crushing it into smaller pieces. It is typically minimally processed, with no additives, making it a popular choice for culinary and decorative purposes.
Rating:
Himalayan pink salt is richer than table salt in trace minerals, such as calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium. Cooking with Himalayan pink salt can enhance the nutritional value of these minerals in a meal, however, the levels of minerals are minimal when keeping within the limits of the recommended amount of sodium per day and will not add a very significant amount. Himalayan pink salt is very minimally processed, which also means that it does not have iodine added, as iodized table salt has iodine added during processing. While Himalayan pink salt is a healthful option when consumed in moderation, there are no research-backed health benefits of consuming it over table salt, except for improving mineral status.
It’s important to note that a 2023 research study found that terrestrial-sourced salts, including Himalayan pink salt, may have higher concentrations of microplastics than sea salt. While microplastics are a consequence of human pollution that is difficult to detect and eliminate from consumption, it’s possible that consuming sea salt instead could help lower exposure.
