What is it:

Malic acid is a natural organic compound used as a food preservative to enhance flavor, adjust acidity, and increase tartness in various food and beverage products. It is naturally occurring in fruits like apples and contributes to their sour taste. Commercially, malic acid is produced through microbial fermentation or chemical synthesis. It is commonly used for it’s sour and tangy flavor in items such as fruit-flavored candies, beverages, and other processed foods.

Malic acid is naturally occurring in plants and may benefit energy as it is involved in the production of energy in our cells. Because of this, scientists have evaluated it as a potential treatment in fibromyalgia. However, the malic acid used as a food additive may be synthetically derived from biofuels such as petroleum and biomass materials.
