Maple syrup is a sweetener derived from the sap of the sugar maple tree. It is made by tapping a maple tree to remove the sap, then boiling the sap until all the water evaporates and a thick syrup remains. The end product is about 66% sucrose. Maple syrup is commonly used in many baking recipes, packaged goods, and as a sweet topping.
While maple syrup is a very low-processed sweetener that contains various beneficial minerals and antioxidants. However, it is a fairly sustainable sweetener that has been associated with inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. Using maple syrup in moderation may be a more health-promoting option than many other sweeteners. However, it is still very high in sugar which can have negative health effects such as increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes when consumed in excess.
