Monk Fruit extract is a zero-calorie natural sweetener that is derived from the Luo Han Guo or Monk Fruit plant. Mogrosides are the primary active component that is extracted from Monk Fruit for its sweetness, which can be up to 250 times sweeter than table sugar. Mogrosides are not absorbed in the intestinal tract, which is why the extract provides zero calories. Monk Fruit extract is made by removing the seeds and skins of the fruit, crushing the fruit, and then filtering and extracting out the mogrosides. Monk Fruit extract can be found in granulated or liquid form and is used in many low-calorie or low-carbohydrate packaged foods and drinks. Keep in mind that monk fruit is sometimes mixed with erythritol, a sugar alcohol.
Monk Fruit extract has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may promote various health benefits, such as improving metabolic biomarkers, increasing insulin sensitivity, lowering oxidative stress, and inhibiting tumor growth, although more human research is needed.
