N-acetyl L-tyrosine is a modified form of the amino acid L-tyrosine, known for its role in the synthesis of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine. The acetylation of L-tyrosine involves the addition of an acetyl group, enhancing its solubility and stability. The production of N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine often involves chemical processes where L-tyrosine reacts with acetic anhydride to form the acetylated derivative. This modified compound is believed to have improved bioavailability compared to L-tyrosine alone. It is commonly used in the formulation of dietary supplements and energy drinks.
Tyrosine is an important amino acid as it plays a role in the production of various neurotransmitters, including epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine. N-acetyl L-tyrosine may be more bioavailable than tyrosine as it is more soluble, however, there is no evidence to support this. In specific situations of physical or mental stress, tyrosine appears to improve cognitive function, however, there is no evidence suggesting benefits for people in non-stressful situations. An animal study suggested that N-acetyl L-tyrosine may aid in the protection of mitochondria.
