Oats

What is it:

Oats are a type of cereal grain derived from the species Avena sativa. They are primarily grown for their seeds, which are highly valued for their nutritional content, including fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Oats are harvested, cleaned, and dehulled to remove the outer hull. Next, the groats (the oat kernels without the hull) are steamed and flattened to produce rolled oats, or they can be cut into pieces to make steel-cut oats. Oats are then used in a variety of food products, from oatmeal and granola to baked goods and snacks.

Rating:

Oats are rich in fiber, antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. they have been associated with various health benefits, including lowering cholesterol, reducing the risk of diabetes, positively modulating the gut, aiding in weight management, and more. Although oats are rich in phytic acid, a compound that can bind to minerals and lower the amount your body absorbs from food, research suggests that consuming oats does not appear to cause lower levels of minerals in the body. However, this may be dependent on an individuals diet. Phytic acid can also be difficult to digest, so soaking oats and cooking them before eating them can help reduce phytic acid content. Choosing organic options can help reduce pesticide exposure.
