Olive Oil (Refined)
Olive Oil (Refined)
What is it:
Refined olive oil is a type of olive oil that is made from lower-quality olive oils that have undergone a refining process. This process involves heating the oil to high temperatures and using chemicals (such as hexane), heat, and filtration to remove any impurities. Refined olive oil has a milder flavor and aroma than extra-virgin or virgin olive oil, making it a popular choice for cooking and baking. However, the refining process also removes some of the oil’s beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants and polyphenols.
Rating:
Refined olive oil is often less expensive than extra-virgin or virgin olive oil, but it is also less healthy and less flavorful. Chemical solvents, such as hexane, may be used in the refining process which may have negative health effects. Refined olive oil is significantly lower in the beneficial compounds that may be responsible for the numerous health benefits of virgin and extra-virgin olive oil. Rand refined olive oil is still a good source of healthy monounsaturated fats (as is extra-virgin and virgin olive oil). Monounsaturated fats have been linked to improved cardiovascular health, reduced inflammation, and reduced risk of cancer.
