Palm Kernel Oil (Refined)
What is it:
Palm kernel oil is a type of vegetable oil that is derived from the kernel, or the inner seed, of the oil palm fruit. It is widely used in various industries including food, cosmetics, and biofuel production. The process of making palm kernel oil involves crushing the kernels from the palm fruit to extract the oil. The oil is then further processed through methods such as solvent extraction to separate it from impurities. Finally, the extracted oil undergoes refining processes to remove any remaining impurities and improve its quality. The resulting palm kernel oil is high in saturated fat content and is primarily used in topical cosmetic applications. The production of palm kernel and palm oil has led to widespread deforestation around the globe and habitat destruction for many endangered species like the orangutan, rhinos, and tigers.
Rating:
Palm kernel oil production has led to deforestation and habitat destruction around the world. It is processed through solvent extraction with harsh chemicals like hexane, and is a significant source of saturated fats that may have negative health implications, but also is rich in vitamin E and antioxidants. Limited research is available on palm kernel oil as a food ingredient.
