Raw cane sugar
What is it:
Raw cane sugar is derived from the sugarcane plant and is made up of sucrose. It is used to sweeten everything from packaged goods to hot beverages and is also commonly sold for baking purposes. The sugarcane plant is harvested to process raw cane sugar, and the cane juice is extracted, purified, filtered, crystalized, and refined to create table sugar.
Rating:
Raw cane sugar is processed in a way that separates the sucrose from the fiber, antioxidants, and other nutrients that are present in cane juice, making a product that is far from its whole form. Consuming high amounts of sugar in any form has been linked to many adverse health effects such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Additionally, sugarcane production is a very water-intensive crop that also has resulted in deforestation and loss of biodiversity in many regions of the world, requires the significant use of fossil fuels, and contributes to pollution. The use of harmful herbicides like glyphosate may be used during sugarcane production as a ripener.
