Rice bran oil (refined)

Rice bran oil (refined)

What is it:

Rice bran oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the outer layer of rice grains, known as rice bran. It is a popular cooking oil and ingredient in skincare products. The production process involves first milling the rice to remove the hulls, leaving behind the bran. Solvents such as hexane are used to extract the oil from the bran, and it undergoes refining processes such as degumming, neutralization, bleaching, and deodorization. The resulting oil is light in flavor and possesses a high smoke point.

Rating:

Rice bran oil is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy fats. Rice bran oil has been associated with various health benefits, including improving serum lipid profiles. However, refined rice bran oil is extracted with hexane, a harsh solvent which the use of can have harmful effects on the environment, people, and animals. Additionally, solvent extraction methods may result in a product with less oxidative stability, meaning that the fatty acids in rice bran oil may be more likely to denature and form harmful compounds during processing, cooking, and storage.
