Table salt, also known as sodium chloride, is a crystalline mineral substance primarily used as a seasoning and preservative in food. It is commonly mined from underground salt deposits, where it is extracted through drilling and blasting. The mined salt undergoes crushing, washing, and refining. Iodine, an essential nutrient for human health, is typically added to table salt during the refining process to prevent iodine deficiency disorders. Table salt is commonly used to enhance the flavor of dishes, preserve food, and provide essential sodium in the diet.
Salt is a primary source of sodium, which is essential for human life. However, excess sodium and added table salt in the diet can cause increased health risks such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and mortality. According to a study performed on rats, sea salt may be less likely to induce hypertension in comparison to refined salt. This may be attributed to the loss of anti-hypertensive minerals (magnesium, calcium, potassium) that occurs during the refining process of table salt. While including table salt in the diet within the recommended daily limits is not harmful, choosing other forms of salt that retain the naturally occurring minerals may be more beneficial to health, such as sea salt and Himalayan salt.
