Silicon Dioxide

Silicon Dioxide

Silicon Dioxide

What is it:

Also known as silica, Silicon Dioxide is used as an anti-clumping additive to avoid clumping in foods. While there are other forms of Silica, we rated the form found as an additive in the food supply, synthetic amorphous silica (SAS). Synthetic amorphous silica is produced synthetically through a vapor phase hydrolysis process or using nanotechnology. It’s a combination of silicon and oxygen molecules. There is limited long term data on the health effects of SAS. All current studies show no adverse effects in the ingestion of SAS currently. One concern is that different forms of SAS may have different behaviors on the body and there’s no way to know which form the food company uses. Another concern is the use of nanotechnology in the processing of SAS, which can change the chemical makeup of the compound.

Rating:

The form of silicon dioxide we ingest in food is artificially developed in a lab and is not naturally occurring in food. Further research needs to be done in order to definitively say there are no adverse effects Silicon Dioxide (in the form of synthetic amorphous silica) has on the body, especially the nanoparticles that are present after it is synthetically produced.

How we rate ingredients

Health is like a bank account, certain ingredients make a deposit into your health bank, meaning they add to
your health. Certain ingredients withdraw from your health bank. We want health promoting ingredients in our diet. To keep things simple, we rate ingredients on a green, yellow, red scale:

Clean

It is naturally occurring in food and has no harmful effects on the body. It is real food. It is health promoting.

Caution

It goes into one or more of the below categories

We Avoid

It is known to have a harmful effect on the body (ex. All food colorings, Natural Flavors, MSG, Potassium bromate, aspartame, artificial flavors)

Top Ingredients To Avoid

Advantame is a non-nutritive, high-intensity artificial sweetener that is similar …
