Sodium Caseinate

Sodium Caseinate

Sodium Caseinate

What is it:

Sodium caseinate, a water-soluble salt derived from casein, a protein found in milk, is a common food additive renowned for its emulsifying, thickening, and foaming properties. It is made by adding acid to skim milk to extract casein and then neutralizing it with sodium hydroxide. It is a popular ingredient in a variety of food products, including processed cheeses, coffee whiteners, and whipped toppings. Sodium caseinate prevents the separation of oil and water in processed foods, while also improving texture and enhancing the creaminess of various dairy-based products.

Rating:

Casein is a rich source of protein. Consuming casein has been associated with increased muscle size and strength, however, some animal studies have suggested that variation of casein may contribute to inflammation. Sodium caseinate may have anti-cancer effects, however, more research is needed. People who are allergic to casein should avoid sodium caseinate. Casein commonly does not come from organic sources unless specified, and non-organic dairy production is harmful to the environment, the cows, and can negatively impact dairy quality.
