What is it:

Soy protein isolate is a further refined form of soy protein, extracted from defatted soybean flakes. The production process involves removing the fat and carbohydrates, leaving a protein-rich powder. Soybeans undergo a series of steps, including solvent extraction, neutralization, and precipitation, to isolate the protein. The resulting soy protein isolate is then often further processed to improve its texture and remove any residual flavors. It is used in the food industry for its high protein content and is commonly found in plant-based and vegetarian food products, such as meat alternatives, protein bars, and dairy substitutes.

Soy protein isolate is highly processed and hexane is the most commonly employed solvent, which is a toxic substance. However, non-harmful solvents may be used, such as ethanol. Soy protein isolate is rich in phytonutrients and has been associated with various health benefits, including lowering serum lipids, reducing the risk of mortality, and protecting against cancer. Soy products are commonly genetically modified, however, organic soy protein isolate options are available.
