Ingredient Score:
Rated at 1/5 green leaves, the McDonald’s McDouble® is positioned at the bottom of our cleaner food options. This product is not organic, and it includes genetically modified (GMO) ingredients, which immediately reduces its standing on our scale. The McDouble® features a variety of ingredients that raise concerns, including added sugars like sugar and citric acid, as well as high fructose corn syrup, which is particularly detrimental to health and carries a heavy penalty in our scoring system.
Further scrutiny reveals the presence of dextrose and corn syrup, both of which are additional forms of harmful added sugars. The bun contains enriched flour, which is less nutritious than whole grain alternatives, and soybean oil, which is often heavily processed and may be detrimental to health. The cheese includes sodium citrate, a common emulsifier, and the pickles are preserved with potassium sorbate, both of which are counted among potentially harmful additives.
The scoring system also identifies maltodextrin, a widely used food additive, as a known harmful substance due to its potential impact on blood sugar levels and gut health. The list of ingredients also includes natural flavors and diglycerides, which are often ambiguous in origin and may have questionable health effects. Additionally, the presence of canola oil, another highly processed oil, contributes to the product’s low rating.
The McDouble® does not align with our mission to promote cleaner, healthier food options. The combination of non-organic ingredients, GMOs, multiple forms of added sugars, and a range of potentially harmful additives make it a product that falls short of our standards for health and quality. Therefore, we advise consumers to avoid this product in favor of choices that support a cleaner and more wholesome diet.
